DA42 Flying Around the World to Increase Awareness of Hearing Impairment
World Flight for Hearing (WFH) is a unique around the world flight in a DA42 to increase awareness of hearing impairment and for the technical aids that are available to assist hard of hearing people. Founder of the project is Johan Hammarström, 28, who despite his severe hearing impairment has managed to become an experienced pilot.
From a young age, Johan was interested in aviation. Introduced by his father to the exhilaration of flying, Johan pursued his pilot’s license and today holds a license for flying most airplanes and has about 1200 hours logged. Johan, along with two friends Henrik Ejderholm and Martin Håkansson, will be the first pilot with a severe hearing impairment to complete a world circumnavigation in a light aircraft. Johan is living proof that with the right attitude and the right technical aids anything is possible, even with a disability. Johan is in the process of flying the DA42 over approximately 34,000 nautical miles that stretch through five continents. Quite a feat! In July, Johan visited EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where the Diamond team was able to congratulate Johan on his journey thus far and his dedication to raising awareness for the hearing impaired.
